About this product
Hobbyweld Argon Welding Gas
Hobbyweld Argon is a high-purity shielding gas for TIG welding stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminium and other non-ferrous metals. It can also be used for MIG welding aluminium when paired with the correct welding wire, torch liner, contact tip and machine settings.
With a specified purity of 99.998% and Grade 4.8, Hobbyweld Argon protects the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination. This helps support a stable arc, controlled weld profile and clean finish when the correct welding procedure is followed.
The rent-free Hobbyweld cylinder scheme makes it a practical choice for home welders, vehicle restorers, fabricators, workshops and light-trade users who do not want to pay ongoing monthly or annual cylinder-rental charges.

Why Choose Hobbyweld Argon?
High-Purity Shielding Gas
Hobbyweld Argon has a specified purity of 99.998%. Its inert shielding characteristics protect the electrode and molten weld pool from atmospheric gases that could otherwise affect weld quality.
Suitable for TIG Welding
Pure argon is suitable for TIG welding a wide selection of metals, including stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminium and other non-ferrous materials.
Suitable for MIG Welding Aluminium
Hobbyweld Argon can also be used as a shielding gas for MIG welding aluminium. The welding machine must be equipped with the correct aluminium wire and suitable consumables.
Rent-Free Cylinder Scheme
Hobbyweld cylinders are supplied without recurring monthly or annual rental charges. Customers normally pay a one-off refundable cylinder deposit and the cost of the initial gas fill.
When the cylinder is empty, return it to a participating Hobbyweld stockist and pay for a refill or exchange. Deposit terms and administration charges may apply, so keep the original deposit form safe.
Nationwide Availability
Hobbyweld cylinders can be exchanged through more than 300 participating stockists nationwide, making them convenient for occasional and regular gas users.

Regulator and Equipment Compatibility
A compatible, pressure-rated argon regulator is required. Hobbyweld Argon Original and Plus cylinders use a 5/8″ BSP right-hand female outlet. The Ultra cylinder uses an EN 561 quick-action connection.
Check the regulator connection and maximum inlet-pressure rating before ordering. Never force an incompatible regulator onto a cylinder or use an unsuitable adaptor. A suitable flowmeter can be used to control the shielding-gas flow according to the welding process and working conditions.
Safety and Storage
Argon is non-flammable and non-toxic, but it can displace oxygen and create an asphyxiation hazard without warning. It is also stored as compressed gas at high pressure.
Always:
- Keep the cylinder upright and securely restrained
- Use and store it in a well-ventilated location
- Protect it from excessive heat, impact and physical damage
- Close the cylinder valve when it is not in use
- Use compatible, pressure-rated equipment
- Check connections for leaks using an approved method
- Follow the regulator and welding-machine instructions
- Observe current handling, storage and transport guidance
Never modify the valve, attempt to refill the cylinder yourself or use damaged equipment. If a leak is suspected, close the valve if it is safe to do so, ventilate the area and seek appropriate assistance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Hobbyweld Argon used for?
Hobbyweld Argon is primarily used as a shielding gas for TIG welding stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminium and other compatible non-ferrous metals.
Can it be used for MIG welding?
Yes, pure argon can be used for MIG welding aluminium when the machine is fitted with the correct aluminium wire and suitable consumables. It is not normally the preferred general-purpose MIG gas for mild steel.
Is Hobbyweld Argon pure argon?
It is marketed as 100% argon and has a specified purity of 99.998%, Grade 4.8.
Can I use it for TIG welding mild steel?
Yes. Hobbyweld lists its argon as suitable for TIG welding carbon steel, which includes common mild-steel applications.
Does the cylinder require a regulator?
Yes. A compatible argon regulator with the correct connection and inlet-pressure rating is essential. The Ultra cylinder has a different outlet connection from the Original and Plus versions.
Is Hobbyweld Argon rent-free?
Hobbyweld operates a rent-free cylinder scheme. Customers normally pay a one-off refundable deposit and the initial gas-fill cost, then pay for a refill or exchange whenever more gas is required. Supplier terms may apply.
